One of the other proverbs people regularly say is ‘never trust a skinny chef’. However, is there any truth in this?
Too many cooks spoil the broth. Out of the frying pan into the fire. To turn up the heat.
There are loads of kitchen-based sayings out there that we use in everyday life.
Here at Chew & Lush, we did a little research into what this means. The original meaning behind it is that a thin chef probably won’t eat the food they cook… meaning that you shouldn’t eat it either.
Now hold on a moment! That might have been true in the past. In the modern-day, you can enjoy lots of delicious dishes and still fit perfectly into your chef whites!
Why should you trust skinny chefs?
Back in the day, cordon bleu cuisine was fatty, sugary and greasy. Although it was flavourful – it was super unhealthy. But that’s the food people associate with fine dining.
Now you can create first-class food any Michelin starred restaurant would be proud to serve. Plus it is plant based, healthy and delicious!
All the top chefs are turning towards a plant based diet to become healthy, lose weight and sustainable. Famous celebrity chefs like Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay have reduced the amount of meat they eat. Chef Eddie Garza (on our list below) lost an incredible amount of weight by turning to a vegan diet!
Frankly, we all want to live a healthy lifestyle and enjoy delicious meals without guilt. It’s awesome to see so many chefs making the switch towards creating healthy gourmet cuisine.
Our favorite ‘skinny’ chefs
If you’re looking for some vegan inspiration and some mouth-watering Instagram photos, here are some of our favorite chefs from around the world!
Tal Ronnen
One chef that can’t be missing on our supreme list of vegan chefs is Tal Ronnen. Even Oprah Winfrey called him “the best vegan chef in America” and who are we to judge that after he prepared vegan meals for her 21-day vegan cleanse.
It has been a success story ever since: he has catered Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi’s vegan wedding, Arianna Huffington’s party at the Democratic National Convention, and even the first vegan dinner at the U.S. Senate. Tal is also the Co-founder of Kite Hill – a vegan cheese brand we absolutely adore.
Kirk Haworth
Another chef worth having an eye on is the award-winning plant based chef Kirk Haworth. The Michelin-trained chef was diagnosed with Lyme Disease which led him to overhaul his lifestyle and explore a plant based diet in pursuit of health.
After discovering that an anti-inflammatory diet without meat, gluten, refined sugar or dairy reduced the intensity of his symptoms – the Plates food ethos was born. Now he creates plates taking all that nature has to offer without compromising on taste or creativity. Convince yourself and take a look at his eats on Instagram or taste his creations at his restaurant Plates in London, reopening in Summer 2021.
With a new focus on sustainability, Kirk is now becoming a leading figure in British plant based cookery and is spearheading a mission to improve chef’s wellness.
Sophia Hoffmann
Sophia is one of Germany’s favorite vegan chefs, showing plant based food can be bright, colorful and most of all… fun!
Not only does she champion veganism and Zero Waste. She also published several books and proudly promotes other female chefs and foodies, helping to grow the vegan scene even further across the world. Sehr gut!

Ayindé Howell
Professional chef Ayindé champions the hashtag #EatLikeASuperHero, proving you can eat delicious hearty food that helps save the planet for future generations to come.
Ayindé has been a lifelong vegan, founded the company IEatGrass and is now creating food above the current standard for plant based meals.
He is most famous for his Vegan Mac & Yease which gives you a healthier, creamy, full of flavor version of the classic American dish. Who said comfort food has to be bad for you?!
Eddie Garza
Eddie is a chef that not only specializes in vegan Mexican food but is also a cookbook author, Program Manager of Food & Nutrition for The Humane Society of the United States, culinary coach, and thought leader on issues related to Latinx health.
He has a remarkable story in that he used to be a staggering 310 pounds when he was 21 years old.. but lost over 150 pounds when he made the switch to a plant based diet.
From spicy cauliflower tacos to mouth-watering chocolate tamales, Eddie’s recipe books have something for everyone. You can definitely trust this chef!
Claire Vallée
Last but not least on our list is chef Claire Vallée. Claire is a self-taught chef and dedicated to a 100 % vegan and organic cuisine.
She is the founder of ONA restaurant – meaning “non-animal origin” in French – which got the first Michelin Star for a vegan restaurant in France, ever! Congratulations!
Claire’s aim is to raise awareness about plant based cuisine and disprove negative clichés that comes with it. All while letting her audience discover new taste buds with a fresh, seasonal and passionate cuisine.
We hope our article left you inspired and hungry for some vegan gourmet cuisine. Maybe we should change the saying to ‘never trust an inflexible chef’?
